Bug List

Today, I will be writing about 20 products, services, or daily problems that bother me. They are not necessarily organized in any particular order besides the order they came to mind. Maybe you can relate to some of the following "bugs".

Number 1: It bothers me how I have cup holders on my backpack, but neither my yeti cup nor my 24 oz Tervis tumbler fits properly. This means I still have to carry the cup around from class to class. This problem exists because the cup holders are not very large and they also are made of mesh which is not strong enough to support a large tumbler.

Number 2: The next "bug" occurs seasonally. During winter and start of spring, whenever I am riding my scooter my nose gets extremely cold. This problem exists because there is not a product that easily covers my nose while also allowing easy breathing. I have a scarf for my neck, hat for my head, ear muffs for my ears, gloves for my hands, but nothing to help out my poor nose.

Number 3: This issue might be too specific to me, but it bothers me how when using a blanket, my lower body will get too hot while my upper body is still cold. This problem exists because often times when using a blanket I still wish to use my arms so I do not put them under the blanket. They are then never able to warm up the way my lower body does.

Number 4: This problem only occurs for me when sharing a bathroom with my sister. Toothpaste easily sticks to the sink if not immediately washed off. This problem mainly exists because of laziness, but also because often times the water coming from the sink does not reach very far up the bowl of the sink. You have to use your hand to splash water to get that toothpaste on and somehow my sister skips that part.

Number 5: It's very unfortunate when someone is nice enough to send you flowers, but they turn brown within three days and you have to throw them away. I think the why to this bug is that flower food isn't often delivered with the flowers so they are not getting anymore nutrition and they die faster.

Number 6: Keeping with flowers, the surface of which you keep flowers in a vase is in jeopardy. The pollen and dead petals/leaves that fall from the flowers unfortunately damages the dresser, table, or whatever they are being kept on. This problem exists because nothing is catching the leaves/petals or the flowers need to be pruned.

Number 7: My next bug is having to worry about denting and/or scratching my baseboards when vacuuming. The why to this problem is that there is not a guard on the vacuum cleaner to protect the baseboards and the paint used for the baseboards is not very durable.

Number 8: I would love to help the sea turtles, but one thing that bugs me is when my paper straw gets too soggy. This problem exists because the paper is dissolving into my drink and I am not drinking fast enough before this process starts.

Number 9: The next thing that bugs me is how my teeth turn purple when drinking red wine. This problem exists because wine is very acidic and the enamel in your teeth are very susceptible to stains.

Number 10: When cleaning my mirrors, sliding glass door, or stainless fridge, I am very bothered by any streaks that are left on the mirror after cleaning it. This problem probably exists because of the solution I am using to clean it or the paper towel/rag I am wiping the mirror with.

Number 11: Whenever I walk on a dirt path or dirt parking lot, no matter what I do I always manage to get dirt in my flip flop. This problem must exist because the front of the flip flop is so low to the dirt that when walking the front of the shoe is pushed into the ground and picks up dirt.

Number 12: After blowing out a candle, there is a ton of smoke that comes from the wick. There is a scientific reason this "problem" exists so in a simple sense the wick is still extremely hot after the flame is blown out, but instead of burning the wax with a flame, the new gas that was created rises into cold air as smoke.

Number 13: Every day I receive upwards of ten calls from telemarketers. This problem exists because I signed up on a job finding website and made the unfortunate decision of giving them my phone number. They then gave it to telemarketers who for some reason now think I want to receive an education in a different continent.

Number 14: I love getting new pillow cases and sheets, but after one wash they already begin to pill (the small balls of fibers that stick to the sheets and pillow cases). This problem exists because I am a college student and cannot afford to purchase high quality sheets that don't pill after one wash.

Number 15: My biggest pet peeve about sunglasses is whenever you walk inside and go to put your sunglasses on your head, your hair gets caught in the nosepiece. This problem exists because of how the metal is bent to attach to the rubber of the nosepiece. Your hair gets caught on the metal and then is pulled out by the rubber or the hinges.

Number 16: Every summer I stress about finding new fun outfits to wear to game day Saturdays in the swamp. It bothers me to have to search multiple websites and stores just to find what I am looking for. This problem exists because there is not one store or website that is tailored to new trends for football Saturdays that is easily accessible to UF students.

Number 17: One thing that bugs me is that my yeti tumbler does not have a lid that fully closes. It just has a hole to drink out of the top. This problem exists because the lid doesn't have a sliding mechanism to fully shut the top so liquid cannot escape.

Number 18: Another thing that bothers me is having to keep my phone near me when working out in order to listen to music. This problem exists because my bluetooth headphones need to be close to the phone in order to connect properly.

Number 19: While in the car, I often get annoyed when I would like to hook up my phone to the aux chord, but I cannot simultaneously charge my phone. This problem exists because there is only one place to plug in both the aux and charger.

Number 20: When cooking chicken, I never know if it is actually cooked all the way through. So I typically have to cut open the chicken in order to see if there is any pink. This problem exists because the outside could look done, but you don't know for sure if it is cooked properly.

When coming up with these 20 "bugs", I found it a little difficult to analyze the world in the eyes of an entrepreneur. I tried to be conscious of the products that frustrate me daily in order to see these frustrations as a possible opportunity. In the end, it really wasn't too hard to come up with these 20 "bugs". This process definitely showed how there are so many little problems that many people have which can translate into an opportunity for new products and new business ventures.

  1. Hey Taylor, I really enjoyed reading through your bug list. Unlike the other student I peer reviewed, you came up with a bunch of different bugs than I did. With that being said, it is nice to get different points of view as to what bugs other people. Not everyone has the same irks, so it was good to see some others. For example, I would not immediately think about the bug of not being able to listen to the Aux and charge your phone simultaneously. However, this is a totally plausible hindrance. Great post!

  2. Hey Taylor,
I can relate with SO MANY of your bugs. Like the backpack cupholder one drives me insane daily. I really liked reading through your list because just about everything on your list was all too relatable, yet when I was making my list I didn’t think of any of them. I really think it’s cool how you were able to find so many good ones for this assignment. I had a really difficult time myself.

  3. Hey Taylor,
I had a good time reading your bug list and found that some of your bugs were things that bothered me too but I just hadn't thought about when writing my assignment. For example, the cup holder on book bags also bothers me. Only very specific bottles fit there and somehow I always manage to have one that doesn't work. I saw that one item on your list was how your arms get cold when using a blanket. Well luckily for you there's already a solution for that! They sell 'snuggies' which are big blankets with arm sleeves so your arms don't get cold!

  4. I like your bug list, some of the things that you mentioned bug me too. Bug number 3 is called a Snuggie. I know it's cheesy but, they really do come in handy. I find bug number 5 not to be the case for me, when I get flowers they usually include flower food, however it doesn't seem to make them last any longer. Bug number 11 is just plain annoying, I hate when that happens. Bug number 15 is on my list as well, it bugs the crap out of me, but I love my aviators.
